DPM: Fear of Penalties for Traffic Violations Is Greater Than Fear of Being Injured
(Phnom Penh): Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Interior, said that the fear of people being fined by police for traffic law violation is greater than the fear of being injured in road accident.
He spoke while presiding over the annual meeting to review road safety results 2019 and set direction for 2020 held today January 21, 2020 at the Ministry of Interior.
A total of 4,121 road accidents were reported nationwide in 2019, killing 1,981 victims and injuring 6,141.
The National Road Safety Committee reports that this dramatic increase in traffic crashes last year belong to various factors which include narrower road structure due to a 36% increase in vehicle demand, lack of traffic signs, lack of lane dividers, poor side road management, ineffective law enforcement, disobeying of traffic rules, and lack of resources for competent authorities and police to perform their tasks.
