Heavy Rains Lead to Floods: Water Resources Minister

(Phnom Penh): The Royal Government Spokesperson Unit today August 15 organized a press conference on “flood update” and “holiday reduction for officials and employees”. Minister of Water Resources and Meteorology Lim Kean Hor confirmed that the torrential rains have caused floods in some provinces.

“Heavy rainfalls caused water-logging in some areas as they can hold less amount of water. If we compare to a jar which can contain 1 litre of water, it is okay to pure the same volume into it. But if we pour over the capacity it can hold, it will spill. To simply put, the areas were submerged under floodwater because they had less storage capacity for rainwater,” he spoke before the journalists.

Rainstorms have occurred since the beginning of August as rains have hit six provinces, including Ratanakiri, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot, Koh Kong, Kep and Phnom Penh. This natural disaster not only affects residents, homes and crops, but also destroys infrastructure.
