Lawyer of Samdech PM Requested the Municipal Court to Sentence Sam Rainsy Based on Law
(Phnom Penh): The Phnom Penh Municipal Court finished the trial of an exiled former CNRP president, Sam Rainsy, allegedly with defamation and incitement on March 17, 2017.
The complaint is against Rainsy, former opposition leader, and accused him of slandering the government, and thus, the premier, and sparking incitement by describing Kem Ley’s killing as “state-backed terrorism” on a Facebook post soon after the critic’s murder at a Phnom Penh gas station on July 10, 2016.
After finishing the hearing in the whole morning, Presiding Judge Y Thavrak declared that the verdict will be announced on March 30, 2017.
Ky Tech, Samdech PM’s lawyer, said that Sam Rainsy’s act is considered public defamation and incitement causing serious chaos in society and he asked the judge to punish Sam Rainsy based on law and asked Sam Rainsy to pay 100 riel for compensation.
Sam Rainsy’s lawyer Sam Sokong said that his client just spoke about that the authority but he did not direct to anyone and he said that his talk is not considered public defamation and incitement. So, he requested the court to drop the charge on his client.
