Sam Rainsy Resigns From Opposition Party Leader, Citing Personal Matter
Phnom Penh: Sam Rainsy, a long-time head of main opposition party in the country- Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP), today announced his resignation from the position of a political party’s leader citing “Personal Matter”.
“I would like to announce my resignation from the positions as a party leader and a member of Cambodia National Rescue Party, because of my personal matter,” Mr. Rainsy wrote in his letter dated February 11 addressing to the steering committee of CNRP and posted on his personal Facebook page this late afternoon.
“As mentioned above, I would like the Standing and the Steering Committees of Cambodia National Rescue Party to be informed of my resignation and please recognize that this decision would come into effect from the date of my signature,” he told senior party leaders.
Yim Sovann, spokesman for CNRP and one of standing committee members, had confirmed the authentication of the letter but he refused to comment on the motivation of his boss’s resignation.
“Yes, it is real but I cannot comment. Please contact Mr. President directly,” Mr. Sovann said.
On his personal Facebook page Mr. Rainsy wrote in Khmer and in English that “In all circumstances I continue to cherish and to uphold the CNRP’s ideals in my heart.”
Mr. Rainsy could not be reached for comment by phone.
