(Phnom Penh): The Union of Journalist Federations of Cambodia (UJFC) issued a press release on the occasion of “World Press Freedom Day 2018”.
The following is the full text of the press release:
UJFC celebrates the “World Press Freedom Day” on May 3, 2018 with national and international journalists from around the world.
UJFC is pleased to take this opportunity to call on national and international journalists working in Cambodia to fight fake news. Fake news is destroying the role of the media and being used as a tool to mislead people in all fields including politics, social issues, the state of the economy, development, health, education, infrastructure, environment, nature, animals and humanity.
UJFC calls on all national and international media to avoid becoming a tool of poisonous political campaign, predatory politics, dark ideology, using derogatory words and inciting personal and institutional conflicts. These negatives practices have always led to discrimination, misunderstanding, hatred and deterioration of cohesion among the populace. UJFC wishes to see peace and harmony within journalism profession as well as national and global communities. UJFC believes that press freedom does not exist in an environment of war. Press freedom is synonymous with positive development, sustainable peace, social stability and vibrant democracy.
We urge all national journalists to continue to uphold nationalism, professional integrity, ethical practice and place national pride and development as the main priority while at the same time respecting the rule of law, sovereignty of Cambodia and our independence as a nation.
UJFC calls on all national and international media to share accurate and comprehensive reporting on Cambodia national election process in July 2018.
UJFC reminds all journalists to be cautious about their personal safety while working in violent and war torn countries, and we condemn intimidation, violence and the killing of journalists around the world.
UJFC expresses gratitude and appreciation for the works of veteran journalists in raising the standard of Cambodian media and encourages colleagues in the media to continue the good work, overcome difficulties and re-evaluate their progress in pursuit of high quality professional practices with dignity in order to contribute to building a society with positive thinking, social harmony and sustainable development of the nation.
