(Phnom Penh) – October 16, 2017: Cambodians would like to reaffirm our stance on foreign diplomats who made recent statements on the situation in Cambodia. Please understand that every time you lecture us on Cambodian affairs, we feel that you are serving your own interests rather than honestly extending your help to our people.
Cambodians clearly understand difference between healthy democracy and color revolution. We also would like to reiterate to our foreign friends that Cambodia has no law to release prisoners unconditionally.
We also understand that people in the United States of America are expressing their suffering by accusing one country of “interfering” in the US’s internal affairs. Cambodia accepts no interference from any country, but Cambodia has not yet reached the point where diplomats are expelled from the country because of such “interference” allegation.
History precisely tells us that color revolutions in more than 20 countries around the world destroyed those countries to ashes. No one dares to take full responsibility for what happened. Please do not scatter this dark color revolution in our homeland.
We would like our foreign friends to be honest with the Cambodian people cooperate to prevent color revolution and any organizations intending to create it.
Cambodia struggled to destroy organization of the “Khmer Rouge” in order to create a “peace” which is considered sacred for national stability and development in Cambodia as it is today. Thus, Cambodia is clear between national interests and destructive actions.
Cambodians are not opposed to political views, but we should have a realistic view of reality and must respect the real needs of the Cambodian people because we perceive that “peace and development” are the most important above all.
Cambodians have enough experience from consequences of war and genocide of Pol Pot in the past which is the legacy of the Cold War. History has taught us to be committed to serving our national interests. Cambodia has also learnt many lessons from around the world which some of you have ignored or refused to accept:
First, the Cambodian people have seen clearly the suffering of refugees caused by the invasion and overthrow of the legitimate government through the “color revolution”, provoked by foreign countries in Yugoslavia, Tunisia, Ukraine, Romania, Egypt, Georgia, Jordan, Morocco, Sudan, Lebanon, Iraq, Kuwait, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and some other countries.
Second, Cambodians are well aware of the tragedy of people around the world, triggered by extremism and ongoing terrorism until today. Cambodians also see that some countries in the Middle East are facing a serious crisis of civil war and separatist demands after the “color revolution”. We should regret that some foreigners are ignoring the consequences and misery of the people, women and children around the world, caused by color revolution.
Third, Cambodians also realize that some countries have suspended democracy in order to restore social stability and national reconciliation, and some countries continue to lead one-party rule to strengthen governance and continue to expand their free-market economy.
Fourth, Cambodians also acknowledge that the standard of leadership and governance of the world does not exist. In our globalized world, there are synergies and yet plenty of fragmented practices. It is both interesting and less predictable.
Given the real experience of the world, Cambodians continue to take the lead in “a constitutional monarchy with a national motto of Nation, Religious, King.” Cambodians respect the constitutional spirit of the multi-party liberal democracy. The Cambodian people have a high national conscience and will continue to vote for our national leader, who has the capacity and ability to fully protect national sovereignty.
We would like to convey to our foreign friends that in political history, if a political party accepts foreign ideas, such political party will always practice extremism, and such practice not only destroys the original values of political philosophy, but also destroys the nation and its people.
We also would like emphasize that Cambodia is currently capable of engaging dialogue with foreigners at all levels in all aspects, with respect to each other and with mutual interests. The Royal Government of Cambodia, together with the Cambodian people, seeks to build friendship, cooperation and partnership with friendly countries around the world.
Now is the time to openly foster democracy by respecting the full rights of the Cambodian people and allowing the Cambodian people the right to choose to continue elect their national leaders in peaceful manners and in respect of the independence and sovereignty of Cambodia.
Cambodia needs beyond only strengthening one sector, but Cambodia needs to expand in all sectors. Therefore, foreign friends should continue to be loyal partners with the Royal Government of Cambodia in all fields including politics, diplomacy, economics, investment, tourism and culture for the benefit of all our people.
We, the Cambodian People
