Republic of Korea, Seoul, 7 July 2017 on «Role of Media in Promoting Democracy and Building Asian Community»
− Honorable Founder of the ICAPP, H.E. Chairman of the ICAPP Standing Committee, Distinguished Members, and Delegates!
It is my honor and privilege to attend this 3rd Meeting of ICAPP Media Forum.
First of all I would like to express my sincere thanks and gratitude to the Co-Chairmen and Secretariat of ICAPP for nominating me as Vice-Chairman of ICAPP Media Forum’s Bureau.
I would like to emphasize that this whole day discussion on topic of «Role of Media in Promoting Democracy and Building Asian Community» has brought us vital and meaningful platform to exchange views and share constructive ideals among the ICAPP member countries.
We acknowledge that we are living in today world that news – whether the news and information spread through traditional media form or via social media – is very important for every single decision. We cannot live our lives without news. News is news and so many news and information came out every single minutes that we need to select it to publish and to read too.
However, there is a conflict of perception between the politicians and the media. The politicians want people to believe and trust in them, while the media want to make people think, reflect, and decide. This conflict in some cases led to mistrust on the leadership causing chaos, social unrest and more. Thus, it is the job the media forum of the ICAPP to share responsibilities in reconciling and negotiating this perceptual conflict, as mentioned by our delegates this morning that there is indeed a «war of perception in the age of fake news». I would like to take this opportunity to urge ICAPP to focus on its first step to built a platform and mechanisms for all political parties to work against the fake news and in return promoting the «Value of True Voice in Asia».
At the same time, we do agree that we need to continue to develop platform and forum where journalists are able to know and to get a sense that their important role is to report the truth that bring positive thinking, bring harmony, bring coexistence, preserve peace, promote democracy and prosperity at their own home and our Asian Community.
I would like to also draw your attention to my country. Cambodia has one of the highest press freedom in Asia. Cambodia should be acknowledged as haven for the media. Media existence promotes healthy democracy. As president of the Union of Journalist Federations of Cambodia (UJFC) I have worked hard to shape the media in my country into more fair, accurate, and balanced publication tools for the benefits of the people.
I thank you for your kind attention.
