(Phnom Penh): This morning, Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia, presided over the 2nd Asia Cooperation Dialogue Tourism Ministers Meetings and the 1st UNESCO/UNWTO international Conference on Sustainable Tourism and Heritage Cities at Sokha Hotel, Siem Reap.
Speaking at the conference under the topic “Conserving and Preserving Urban Heritages”, Samdech Techo Hun Sen requests UNESCO to be open-minded and see directions of the sustainable development goals in the sense that the development of the country is not affected. UNESCO shall be neither left nor right.
“I have come across this issue for many times, even in Phnom Penh city, at some point, we will place hundreds of houses under conservation and people are unhappy. I have been to the location where the building nearly collapses. Those who need the location will not preserve it but they will build a new building.”
Samdech Techo Hun Sen added that, “UNESO should consider which place we should preserve and which place we should not. We cannot place the entire city under conservation without development. However, we cannot develop without considering conservation.”
