(Mondolkiri): A rampaging elephant that trampled on its owner was shot by Mondolkiri provincial authority. The elephant got injured and died in the morning of April 7, 2017 while it was attacking people and destroying houses in Mondolkiri province’s Sen Monorom city.
Provincial police officials said that the rampaging elephant which trampled on its owner to death was shot dead by provincial police officials under the command of Mondolkiri provincial governor Svay Sam Eang because on April 6, this elephant attacked people and destroyed seven houses in Putang village, Romnea commune in Sen Monorom district and damaged a police’s fire truck which went down to intervene the incident.
Even if police spread water to prevent it from trampling and fired a gun in the air to frighten it but the elephant was not scared.
Keo Sopheak, director of Mondolkiri provincial environment department, told Swift News that the elephant was shot to death because the expert officials had no choice as they were requested by expert officials of Tamao Zoo Mountain to bring hypnotism medicine since on April 5 but the expert officials of Tamao Zoo Mountain did not go there until the early morning of April 7. Provincial governor Svay Sam Eang ordered to kill the elephant by shooting to protect people’s safety.
Svay Sam Eang, Mondolkiri provincial governor, said that they shot the rampaging elephant because it attacked houses where patients were staying and police could not stop the elephant from trampling. Then, he ordered police to kill the elephant by shooting to protect the people’s safety.
He also regrets the elephant’s death because this elephant served tourism sector and carried tourists to visit somewhere and another reason is because the expert officials of Tamao Mountain Zoo were too late.
This elephant which was shot dead served tourism sector for the community in Putang village. Its name is Atkor, 70 years old, a wild elephant which a Pnong person adopted from the forest and raised it since it was small.
Sao Sopheap, spokesman of the Environment Ministry, said that the Ministry of Environment received the information last night that the elephant was shot and got injury but until this morning, he heard that the rampaging elephant died and this is the decision of Mondolkiri provincial authority. On behalf of the Ministry of Environment, he regrets the loss of the rare elephant.
